But yesterday, the Oregon Court of Appeals let the original decision stand, with the three-judge panel refusing to overturn the ruling made by the state's labour commissioner past year.

SALEM, Ore., Dec. 28, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Today, the Oregon Court of Appeals issued its decision in the case of Aaron and Melissa Klein, former owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa.

The Kleins were found to be in breach of a 2007 state law that protects the rights of LGBTQ people in employment, housing and public accommodations.

Attorneys for the First Liberty Institute, which argued for the Kleins in front of the Oregon Court of Appeals last March, contend the bakery owners are being denied their First Amendment right to free speech and can't be forced under state law to endorse same-sex marriage by serving a same-sex couple. It does not matter how you were born or who you love.

"All of us are equal under the law and should be treated equally", the couple said. Orgeon will not allow a "Straight Couples Only" sign to be hung in bakeries or other stores.

First Liberty, one of the nation's most prominent religious liberty law firms, represented the Kleins.

Any Oregon employer seeking to navigate the Oregon Equality Act or other civil rights protections can contact BOLI's Technical Assistance for Employers with questions at (971) 673-0824.

Shackelford added, "In a diverse and pluralistic society, people of goodwill should be able to peacefully coexist with different beliefs". The Kleins have directed us to no evidence whatsoever that ORS 659A.403 was enacted for the goal of singling out religiously motivated action, or that BOLI has selectively targeted religion in its enforcement of the statute.

The couple who simply wanted a wedding cake, Laurel Bowman and Rachel Cryer, "became the victims of death threats - as well as outrageous and horrific claims by conservative media outlets and anti-gay groups", after filing their discrimination claim, as NCRM reported in 2015.

The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments earlier this month in a similar case involving a bakery in Colorado. "And what's unfortunate here is that a family and their business has been punished because of their religious beliefs".

The case will likely now be appealed to the Oregon Supreme Court. That decision is expected next June.
