An Indian Army major and three other soldiers were killed along the Line of Control in a suspected Pakistan-backed operation on Saturday but multiple versions surfaced on the nature of the attack in Jammu's Rajouri.

The Indian Army says four of its soldiers were killed when Pakistani forces fired across the de facto border in the disputed region of Kashmir.

Army chief General Bipin Rawat recently held that peace talks with Pakistan could take place only when it stopped supporting terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir.

Joshi said Army retaliated strongly and effectively to the ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops. Qamar had said that issues with India could be solved through talks instead of war.

Sources said an injured army man later succumbed to injuries in the hospital, taking the death toll to four. Ceasefire violations along the LoC in 2014 and 2015, for instance, stood at 153 and 152, respectively, while the tally was 228 a year ago.

Two soldiers were seriously wounded in the firing from across the LOC.
