Many fans of both the royal family and Markle criticized the move, saying it was offensive to wear the brooch given that Markle is biracial.

While we don't know if Meghan broached the topic of the brooch with her future in-law, we do know this isn't Princess Michael of Kent's first experience with conscious or unconscious racism.

Ms Markle has spoken openly on many occasions about being the daughter of a white father and a black mother and her engagement to Prince Harry has been seen as a huge marker for progress in the Royal Family.

Blackamoor art, mostly made in the 18th century, often depicts dark-skinned Africans in subservient roles in sculptures, figurines and jewellery.

The Princess' brooch appears to be the bust of an African person, wearing a crown and jewels.

She also told the Mirror: "With Harry frowning seriously beside her, Meghan suddenly sits looking rather small and childlike".

On Wednesday, Meghan Markle accompanied her husband-to-be, Prince Harry, to Queen Elizabeth's annual pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace.

She quickly assembles a crack team of pickpockets, designers, knock-off jewelry makers, and Rihanna to infiltrate the Met Gala . Debbie also informs a man played by James Corden that "the whole family" is in the heist business.

Another took aim at her "racist jewelry" while a third added: "I hope the Queen is going to ban this racist, terrible woman from any further gatherings".

In 2004, Princess Michael came under fire when she told a group of black patrons at a New York City restaurant to "go back to the colonies", the Guardian reported at the time.

If you haven't heard the name Princess Michael of Kent, we wouldn't blame you. Morphing from Latina when I was dressed in red, to African-American when in mustard yellow; my closet filled with fashionable frocks to make me look as racially varied as an Eighties Benetton poster.

The pair even addressed the issue in their first interview as an engaged couple, with Markle noting, "Of course it's disheartening".

What do you think of Princess Michael's brooch? I wanted to be a writer.

After the uproar over her brooch, Princess Michael's spokesman released a statement expressing remorse and vowed never to wear the blackamoor brooch again.
