Australian Parliament says yes to same-sex marriage in landslide vote

In December 2013, same-sex marriage was very briefly legal in the Australian Capital Territory.

Australia's House of Representatives has voted overwhelmingly in favour of same-sex marriage, passing a historic Bill on Thursday (Dec 7) that drew broad cross-party support.

"The government is accountable in question time and so is the opposition so we will all be accountable in question time today as we are every day that parliament sits".

That was the hope of Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull after 62% of Australians voted in favor of same-sex marriage in a legally non-binding postal survey conducted over two months earlier this year.

"In one of the last conversations I had with him he just said to me 'Hendo, just bloody well get on with it ok?'."

Australia's first same-sex weddings will not take place until at least January, however, because of a longstanding requirement for all Australian couples to provide a full month's notice of their intention to get married.

Congratulations to Australia, most especially to those who fought long and hard to make this a reality!

Wedding planner Jennifer Kennedy told Daily Mail Australia she doesn't expect a massive spike in the average cost of weddings but is concerned same-sex couples could be targeted by eager business owners
Same-sex marriage bill set to pass through House of Representatives today

As opposed to a union between a man and a woman, the same-sex marriage bill recognises marriage as simply "a union between two people".

After the bill passed the Senate last week, House proceedings kicked off with fireworks Monday when Liberal MP Tim Wilson surprised his colleagues by proposing to his longtime partner Ryan Bolger.

"A promise was made by the leaders of this parliament and this promise has not been adequately delivered on", Mr Abbott said.

"We thank all Australians for their support for saying yes, we thank all those who have campaigned for many years, for over 10 years, for fairness and equality".

"This Parliament, when we passed the marriage equality law, is not a gift from us to LGBTIQ Australians, equality is never a gift to be given".
