The Houthi-run Masirah TV announced the death of the "leader of the traitors", referring to Saleh, who ruled the country for more than three decades, and up until last week was in a fragile alliance with the rebels.

As fighting rocked the capital on Monday, the Huthis said Saleh had been killed, and a video they supplied to AFP showed what appeared to be his corpse.

Saudi-owned al-Arabiya television has quoted sources in former President Ali Abdullah Saleh's party as confirming he had been killed. Initial reports indicated he was killed by the rebel group, known as the Houthis - a stunning development given that Saleh had been allied with the Houthis until just a few days ago.

The fighting that led to Saleh's death also apparently allowed the Houthis gain control of the majority of Yemen's capital Sanaa.

A Houthi media official, Abdel-Rahman al-Ahnomi said Houthi fighters killed Mr Saleh as he tried to flee to Saudi Arabia though the province of Marib, to the east of the capital.

He says it is in the interest of the nation to put an end to the strife, and he is urging Saleh to be wise and to cooperate with all efforts to end the strife. The news that Saleh had been killed came just hours after Saudi Arabia made a decision to back Saleh, calling his fight against the Houthis a "popular uprising".

Two of Saleh's associates have confirmed and a third official from the government of Yemen's internationally recognized president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, has also confirmed.

Saleh announced on Saturday he was ready to turn a "new page" in ties with the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen if it stopped attacks on Yemeni citizens, in a move that could pave the way to end almost three years of war, Reuters reported.

Saleh loyalists and rebel fighters continued to clash on Saturday afternoon in Sanaa, where violence has left at least 40 fighters dead or wounded since Wednesday according to rebel chief Abdulmalik al-Huthi.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) dismissed claims that Yemen's Houthi rebels fired a missile towards a nuclear plant in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, state news agency WAM reported.

Fierce fighting around Yemen has reportedly killed dozens of people over the weekend (December 2 to 3).
