Although the air defences responded to the attack, intercepting two of the missiles, the rest caused damage to the base.

It appears the base is likely the same one featured in a November BBC report which showed satellite images detailing the purported construction and renovation of an "Iranian military base" near El-Kiswah, which lies 14 km (8 miles) south of Damascus.

The attack killed and wounded a number of Iranian soldiers, according to Al Qoraish, an Arab newspaper in London.

Israel has acknowledged carrying out repeated air and missile strikes in Syria since the beginning of the war six years ago in order to stop arms deliveries to Hizballah.

An Israeli military spokesperson declined to comment.

"The Israeli enemy fired after midnight at 12:30 several ground-to-ground missiles at a military location in the countryside of Damascus, where our air defenses intercepted and destroyed two missiles", SANA cited security sources as saying.

The Israeli air force has said it struck arms convoys of the Syrian military and Lebanon's Hezbollah almost 100 times during more than six years of the Syrian war.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said often that Israel will not allow Iran to establish a permanent presence in Syria. In short, the BBC spread what it acknowledged to be a mere "claim" based exclusively on an unnamed "Western intelligence source". Israel has not confirmed that attack either.
