The FBI folded Flynn into an official investigation into the possibility that Team Trump colluded with Russia, an inquiry that began in July 2016 after the us intelligence community picked up reports of a pattern of odd contacts between the Trump campaign and an assortment of Russians.

Trump names Flynn as his national security advisor. According to the Wall Street Journal, four individuals have told federal investigators that the meeting included discussion of a Turkish proposal to forcibly detain Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish dissident cleric living in exile in Pennsylvania, and deliver him to Turkey, in exchange for up to $15 million.

The Obama administration imposes sanctions on Russian Federation in retaliation for Russia's hacking of the Democratic National Committee in the summer and other efforts to interfere with the USA election.

The documents allege that Flynn lied about conversations with the Russian Ambassador at the time, Sergei Kislyak.

Next, Flynn can tell Mueller what, if anything, he knows about the contacts between Russian Federation and a series of Trump officials in 2016, including meetings, emails, phone calls and trips involving Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Carter Page, Roger Stone and George Papadopoulos.

Donald Trump is sworn in as the 45th president of the United States by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. At a time when tensions were hightened between the U.S. and Russia, Flynn was asked about whether he discussed sanctions against the country with the ambassador before he took office.

A report from the Washington Post then said that Flynn has indeed discussed sanctions, reportedly causing rifts with senior colleagues who had defended him. Flynn's decision to admit to these lies and cooperate with the Special Counsel occurred, if press reports are to be believed, with the backdrop of broad legal exposure by Flynn, in addition to his son.

Flynn resigns after the Washington Post discloses that he has misled Vice President Mike Pence and other administration officials about his contacts with Kislyak. "I accept full responsibility for my actions". "If anything he did something right".

As part of Flynn's plea deal he agreed to "cooperate fully, truthfully, completely, and forthrightly" with the special counsel's office.

"Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn".

The US continues to reel as further information comes out about apparent attempts by Russian Federation to influence the recent presidential election and sow discord within America though fake social media accounts.

Flynn pleads guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He is the first official who worked in the Trump White House to make a guilty plea in a wide-ranging investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller into possible co-ordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

Michael Flynn, right, arrives at the E. Barrett Prettyman Federal Courthouse in Washington, D.C., on December 1.
