A fire at the Leogrand Hotel in Batumi, Georgia, killed 11 people, including ten Georgians and one citizen of Iran, the Georgian Interior Ministry reported on Saturday.

Leogrand Hotel is now hosting this year's Miss Georgia contest, but organizers said none of the contestants were injured in fire. "The fire has now been extinguished", the regional interior ministry said in a statement.

It is not yet clear what sparked but early reports suggest it started in the spa-cabin area. There was no fire escape, for example. Officials said none of the 20 contestants, who were reportedly staying in the hotel, were injured.

The hotel fire also hurt at least 21 people, according to the Russian Interfax news agency.

"The main stairs of the hotel were blocked due to the fire and the hotel visitors were stuck on the seventh floor".

Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, who was returning to Georgia from Brussels, landed in Batumi and visited the scene. The city is a popular getaway destination for tourists from Turkey, where gambling is illegal, and Turkish nationals have invested heavily in the city's tourism sector over the last decade.
