SC women's basketball champions decline White House invite

NCAA South Carolina Champs South Carolina women's basketball finally invited to White House, but it's too late

Trump began a series of stops on the South Lawn, then went to the State Floor and Rose Garden on the White House grounds.

"We did hear from the White House about attending (Friday's) event, but we will not be able to attend", SC coach Dawn Staley said in a statement Thursday night.

The Gamecocks now join a growing list of recent sports teams to not make the customary White House stop after winning championships.

"We did hear from the White House about attending tomorrow's event, but we will not be able to attend", Staley said in a statement.

Staley said the team received the invitation about two weeks ago, but said she and her NCAA champions are busy trying to get better.

Butch Jones Out at Tennessee
Dooley, Johnny Majors, Doug Dickey and Bowden Wyatt are the only Tennessee coaches to endure one-win conference campaigns. Jones had three years remaining on his contract, which owed him $4.1 million annually through the 2020 season.

Trump celebrated the Collegiate National Champions of 2016 and 2017 at the White House on Friday. Both the Warriors and the Penguins won their titles months after SC did.

"We haven't gotten an invitation yet and that in itself speaks volumes", she told the Associated Press. "I don't know what else has to happen". "We'll go to the White House", she said at the time.

When South Carolina's invitation to Friday's White House event finally did arrive earlier this month, Staley declined it.

Trump sparred with professional athletes earlier this year when National Basketball Association star Stephen Curry said his championship-winning Golden State Warriors didn't wish to meet with Trump.

The North Carolina men's basketball team said last week that it won't visit the White House because of a scheduling conflict. She also defended her team's move.
