The new standard means almost half (46 per cent) of the USA population will be defined as having high blood pressure. "And yet it carries with it a really high risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney damage, so one of the most important things that I can do as the doctor is to treat high blood pressure and to prevent those things in my patients".

Almost half of the U.S adult population is now considered to have high blood pressure.

Dr. Larry Gordon from Aspirus said the association most likely made the changes to be proactive and lower the risk of people being diagnosed with more serious illnesses later on.

The changes were announced at the American Heart Association's 2017 Scientific Sessions conference in Anaheim, California.

FOX Business reached out to some of the top pharma companies named above but did not immediately receive a comment on how the new guidelines could potentially impact sales going forward.

High blood pressure is sometimes called a silent killer because there are no symptoms.

"There are millions of people that fall into this category that's now called Stage One Hypertension who previously we were calling normal blood pressures", Cardiology Director for the Heart and Vascular Institute at the Hartford Healthcare Corporation at MidState Medical Center Dr. Bill Farrell said.

He said a diagnosis of the new high blood pressure does not necessarily mean a person needs to take medication, but that "it's a yellow light that you need to be lowering your blood pressure, mainly with non-drug approaches".

Jarvis says before the new guidelines, about a third of Mainers had hypertension, or high blood pressure. The association recommends that those with stage 1 hypertension will only be prescribed medication if they have a heart attack or stroke.

The old standard listed a reading above 140 over 90 as high blood pressure. Now 103 million people will have high blood pressure.

The proper technique must be used to measure blood pressure, and levels "should be based on an average of two to three readings on at least two different occasions", according to the new guidelines.
