In its first public test drive, the Bloodhound SSC completed two laps along the 2.7-km (9,000-ft) runway powered by a Rolls-Royce EJ200 jet engine, which is typically found in a Eurofighter Typhoon jet.
Bloodhound Project director Richard Noble, himself a former land speed record holder, called the run "the biggest milestone in the history of the project so far" because it allows them to replace theoretical calculation with practical proof and to move on to the next critical stage on the road to a record that some still believe to be impossible. The first took many people by surprise and people scrambled to turn on phones and cameras as the potential record-breaker hit its top speed in just eight seconds.
Bloodhound SSC was driven by ex-RAF fighter pilot Andy Green along the runway at Cornwall Airport Newquay.

Egyptian official: 14 policemen killed southwest of Cairo
The agency, citing an unnamed security official, said that a number of militants were killed but gave no further details. It also said that 13 policemen, including four officers and nine conscripts, were injured and one policeman was missing.
They are expected to make the record attempt in 2019 in the Kalahari Desert, the paper says. For the initial record attempt, the Bloodhound will use a single monopropellant rocket which can produce around 40kN of thrust. The test was a prelude for the rocket-powered car's ultimate, record-setting goal: 1,000 miles per hour (1,610 km/h).
"The design and engineering team has done an incredible job with Bloodhound SSC". The runs are probably the fastest the vehicle will ever go in the United Kingdom, he added.
Green made two successful runs, hitting speeds of more than 200 miles per hour in 8 seconds in at least one run. Green has to throttle back the jet, which will have enough fuel in the system to keep Bloodhound going up to 200mph.
