Storm Brian, now over the mid-Atlantic, will "undertake explosive cyclogenesis" over the next 24 hours, according to the Met Office, meaning the low pressure cyclonic weather system will see a rapid collapse in pressure.

Batten down the hatches, Storm Brian is on the way.

Experts say dramatic weather conditions created by the phenomenon, caused when central pressure in an area of low pressure falls rapidly, will see 60mph winds hit parts of southern Britain this morning.

Alison Baptiste, National flood duty manager for the Environment Agency has warned: "Strong winds are expected across southern England on Friday night and into Saturday".

While Co. Tipperary is not included in the list of counties with high-wind warnings, neighbouring counties Clare, Cork, and Waterford are.

"Explosive cyclogenesis" takes place when air is sucked upwards by the jet stream, leaving low pressure below.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for high winds in Wales, the South West and the South on Saturday.

"Gusts exceeding 50mph are expected widely within the warning area, with gusts of around 70mph along exposed coastal areas".

A Met Office weather warning said: "A spell of strong southwesterly winds is expected. We are concerned that there could be some flooding at the immediate coast but even without flooding there will be some very high waves", he said.

Now no flood alerts or flood warnings have been issued for the Anglian region by the Environment Agency (EA), but EA national flood duty manager, Alison Baptiste, said: "We urge people to stay safe along the coast".

The Met Office yellow warnings will come into action at 4am on Saturday October 21 and will last until 11.59pm the same day.

"Speed restrictions may be imposed in the worst-affected areas for safety reasons, which may delay your journey".

Wind speeds of up to 80mph in isolated areas has been predicted as the storm sweeps over the south of the United Kingdom and Ireland before moving northwards.
