Apple unveiled the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in September alongside the high-end iPhone X. Some analysts believe the company is likely to focus more on the iPhone X, which looks radically different with an edge-to-edge display.

Shares of Apple on Nasdaq were trading down 2.45 percent to $155.77 as of 3pm BST Thursday afternoon.

That could mean that shipment numbers could total just five to six million units per month in November and December, well below the estimated demand for 50 million units of the other new release, the iPhone X, when preorders begin on October 27.

Apple is reportedly having supplier issues with the new parts required for the iPhone X. The company is having trouble sourcing the Glass panels, Bloomberg reports.

There has been questions for a while now as to whether Apple complicated its device range too much, and whether the iPhone X simply costs too much.

DOJ gives last chance warning to NYC for sanctuary city policies
In a statement Thursday, Mayor Mitch Landrieu says the DOJ confirmed the city's compliance. Mayor Kenney said Philadelphia welcomes immigrants and supports its immigrant communities.

Other analysts have cited newspaper reports from the Taiwan-based newspaper Economic Times, in which an unnamed source talked of a 50 percent cut in orders for the iPhone 8. Launch demand for the iPhone 8 may not have been weak, but also saw much shorter lineups at some stores.

"While carriers continue to offer promotions for the new iPhone 8, they have been much more modest compared with those for the iPhone 7 launch previous year", he wrote.

A recent report by KeyBanc Capital Analyst John Vinh said Apple's older iPhone 7 models are outselling the iPhone 8 ahead of the early November debut of the premium iPhone X. "Certainly Hon Hai could rise as it's the sole assembler of the iPhone X", said Anderson Chien, a Cathay Futures executive vice-president. The iPhone X, with its edge-to-edge screen and new form factor, is the new flagship phone from the company. The iPhone X, which goes on sale November 8, features an all-new design with an edge-to-edge OLED screen and revolutionary facial recognition technology.

"Why are there two distinct models in Apple's iPhone portfolio?"

Rogers Communications chief Joe Natale said anticipation was high for the iPhone X but also noted that inventory would be limited and that - at Apple's starting price of $999 - it was an expensive device.
