A reprieve in Spain-Catalonia tensions gives investors a break ... for now

Apart from these aspects, which have historically fed into the independence movement, residents of Barcelona say they pay exorbitant taxes to Madrid and don't receive their worth back in services.

The most serious threat to Spain's national unity in decades is likely to come to a head in the coming days with attention focused on whether Catalonia will make good on its promise to declare independence - and what form that declaration may take if it comes to pass. Notwithstanding, over 90 percent voted for independence.

The signs of extremism were filmed asTens of thousands of people took part in marches across Spain to oppose Catalan independence.

"We have said yes to so many mediation options that have been proposed", he said.

Meanwhile, the former leader of Catalonia, Artur Mas, told the Financial Times newspaper that the region was not yet ready for real independence - even though he believed it had won the right to break away.

Hundreds of thousands of Spaniards rallied Sunday in a tide of red and yellow national flags in what is the worst upheaval since the country returned to democracy in the 1970s.

Joaquin Penas, an off-duty soldier who marched in Madrid, said if Catalonia declared independence it would be "like cutting off an arm".

Speaking to El Pais on Sunday, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said: Spain is not going to be divided and the nation's unity will be maintained.

But there was intense speculation on Monday about whether Puigdemont would go ahead with such a provocative move - particularly in the light of a huge rally against independence in Barcelona at the weekend that exposed deep misgivings about his tactics among some sections of Catalan society.

The region's president Carles Puigdemont is expected to address parliament tomorrow following a landmark referendum to separate.

Article 155 of Spain's constitution says that if a region's government breaches its constitutional obligations or "acts in a way that seriously threatens the general interest of Spain", Madrid can "take necessary measures to oblige it forcibly to comply or to protect said general interest".

A number of businesses, including Catalonia's top two banks have announced plans to relocate their headquarters to other parts of Spain, while others have raised concerns over losing European Union membership and access to its common market in the event of secession. The latest crisis has raised fears of unrest in Catalonia, a north-eastern region about the size of Belgium that is home to 7.5 million people and accounts for a fifth of Spain's economy. Yet turnout was only 43%, as most unionists boycotted the ballot.

The Catalan government had previously said it would declare independence within 48 hours of a yes vote in the referendum.
