Carmakers Welcome Arrival of Saudi Women Behind the Wheel

Women to be allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia Possible opportunities from Saudi Arabia lifting the women driving ban
Arthur Frazier | 29 September, 2017, 00:11

Some said that it was inappropriate in Saudi culture for women to drive, or that male drivers would not know how to handle having women in cars next to them. "This is a truly historic day", she told The Australian newspaper.

The Saudi government has said Vision 2030, a vast plan of economic and social reforms, will raise women's share of the labour market to 30 percent from 22 percent now. "#Women2Drive done. #IammyownGuardian in progress", wrote Ms.al-Sharif, who was arrested and jailed for driving in 2011. The biggest issue may be winning the approval of Saudi Arabia's Wahhabi clerics, the most conservative of the Islamic faith.

On Sept. 27, his government announced that the ban on female driving would be lifted, starting next year. The king still emphasized that the state is the guardian of Shariah values.

"The move to allow women to drive is set to benefit the entire market", LMC analyst David Oakley said. Women already dominate men in numbers at universities. Migrant workers from countries such as the Philippines and Indonesia still suffer sickening exploitation.

Facebook To Require Disclosure Of Those Who Buy Political Ads
He said he did not intend for anyone "to use our tools to undermine democracy". "That's not what we stand for", he said. Facebook is scrambling to put in place policies and procedures to handle that vast influence in a responsible way.

A leading journalist of the country Faisal J. Abbas described it as "woman driving is a huge leap forward for Saudi Arabia". Right now, the country is a literal patriarchy, one that's been able to quell dissent by doling out allowance in the form of cheap gas.

In a country where gender segregation has been strictly enforced for decades in keeping with the austere Wahhabi form of Sunni Islam, the decree means women will have regular contact with unrelated men, such as fellow drivers and traffic police. The government hopes to raise that to 30 percent by 2030.

Increasing numbers of women are working in a growing number of professions, and in 2015, women were allowed to vote and to run for seats on the kingdom's local councils. President Trump has commended the kingdom's decision to affirm the right of women to drive in the country. Permitting women to move freely to their own jobs isn't magnanimous, it's practical and necessary.

It is time for the movement to evaluate the choices it has made in its campaigning, and for a structural dismantling of the oppression faced by all women in Saudi Arabia. Until now, Saudi Arabia has been the only country in the world that didn't allow women to drive and it has received a lot of criticism for detaining women who broke the law by getting behind the wheel.
