Contractors in San Diego have begun building prototypes for President Donald Trump's new border wall with Mexico. The area runs parallel to the U.S. -Mexico border and is just a few yards away from a preexisting border fence.
Last month the Trump administration said it had selected four construction companies to build concrete prototypes for a wall, which will be will be 30 feet (9 meters) tall and about 30 feet wide and will be tested in San Diego.
The building process will last about 30 days, Customs and Border Protection said.
Customs and Border Protection may pick several winners or none, with the final wall likely to be comprised of elements from the successful prototypes.
The prototypes will be 18 to 30 feet high and 30 feet long.
Caddell Construction Co. of Montgomery, Alabama, and W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Co. of Philadelphia, Mississippi, were awarded contracts to build one wall of concrete and one of other materials.
Of the eight prototypes, four will be made of concrete and the other four will be built of alternate or "other materials", according to the agency. "The new designs would be added to our menu of existing designs, and allow us to tailor a specific wall design to the unique demands of individual areas of the border".
It remains to be seen, however, when the construction of the wall alongside the U.S. Mexico border is slated to begin.
"We support the right to peacefully protest, but there is no need to bring weapons", said Ron Lane, the county's deputy chief administrative officer.
"The border between the US and Mexico spans some 2,000 miles - the list of laws violated by the president's administration in order to build this campaign wall is nearly as long", Becerra told reporters then. Vitiello showed diagrams of plans for border solutions in both urban and rural areas, which included a "see-through" design, usually a bollard fence, along the immediate border, a zone for enforcement, and then a secondary barrier with the cameras and sensors. In fact, the prototypes can be disassembled after construction.
Funding to extend the wall beyond its distance of 1,046 kilometres is in doubt.
