The discovery was made following an autopsy of Hernandez following his suicide in April. The study was admittedly biased in that it only included the brains of players whose families said showed signs of CTE, but that doesn't change the fact that their suspicions were well-grounded.
Belichick was asked general about how the team educates players about the disease, which is linked to athletes who suffer repeated blows to the head.
The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court claimed that the league and Patriots failed to protect their players' safety, leading to the disease that deprived Hernandez's 4-year-old daughter, Avielle, of her father's companionship. She also claims that the National Football League and the Patriots knew about the link between CTE and suicidal impulses and failed to share that information with Hernandez, who ended his own life while in prison this past April.

Trump takes on McCain over health care vote
But for now, it seems like the GOP will fail to get anything done on this signature campaign issue, with McCain, Sen. This has left little wiggle room for Republicans to lose any votes - with three "no" votes, the bill can not pass.
Therefore, when Baez speaks of brain damage possibly being the root cause for Hernandez's aggressive and self-destructive behaviors, and most notably his suicide last April, remember that's a lawyer talking looking for a huge settlement. Hernandez' background included other aggressive behavior and drug use. We still know very little about CTE as a degenerative disease, and we know even less about how to prevent it or treat it. These hits can cause the brain to ricochet inside the skull, damaging nerve cells. The suit seeks $20 million.
CTE can be diagnosed only after death. But because Hernandez's brain scan showed that he had damage that was usually seen in someone in their 60s or 70s, Baez appears to be leveraging this surprising discovery to springboard to a big payday. A defining feature is abnormal deposits of tau, a protein that occurs naturally in the brain but is displaced in CTE.
Since it was first discovered in 2002 in the post-mortem brain of Pittsburgh Steeler star Mike Webster, the disease has been found in the brains of an increasing number of dead football players, most notably those who were in the NFL. He was released in 2013 after his arrest.
A statement issued by the Boston University CTE Center says Dr. Ann McKee, chief of neuropathology at the VA Boston Healthcare System and director of the Center, examined Hernandez's brain and found that "Mr. Hernandez had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), Stage 3 out of 4, (Stage 4 being the most severe)".
