World leaders line up to sign nuclear ban treaty

The United Nations General Assembly The United Nations General Assembly

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on Wednesday at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in NY.

Speaking after the ceremony, Onyeama said Nigeria signed the treaty because right from the early 60s, Nigeria has been a strong advocate for nuclear weapons' prohibition and also, non proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Supporters of the pact say it is time to push harder toward eliminating atomic weapons than nations have done through the almost 50-year-old Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Under the ban's language, it takes effect 90 days after the 50th nation ratifies it. Nuclear-armed countries also declined to participate in the entire treaty process, from its negotiations to its adopting vote.

But, like the signers of the treaty, we should recognize that the danger of nuclear annihilation will persist as long as any nations possess nuclear weapons.

A number of countries have embarked on nuclear weapons programs, but have since renounced their aspirations.

Besides the United States and Russian Federation, which are believed to have the largest nuclear arsenals, Britain, China, France, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea all have nuclear bombs. "Two decades without the treaty's entry into force have been two decades lost in our common goal of a world without nuclear weapons", Archbishop Gallagher said. "But we need to do more to get the whole way there".

The island and 40 other States endorsed the initiative adopted on July 7, which prohibits the development, testing, production, acquisition, possession, storage and transfer, as well as the threat of use of those lethal devices considered a serious danger for human survival. Two other major treaties are the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, introduced in 1970 and 1996 respectively. "It has the potential to prevent a nuclear arms race and an escalation of regional and bilateral tensions", he added.

USA not giving up on diplomacy with N. Korea: State Department
North Korea responded to the "vicious" sanctions by vowing to inflict "the greatest pain" the USA has ever suffered. Clearly, tensions between the USA , its allies, and North Korea are not settling down anytime soon.

Guyana, the Vatican and Thailand have already ratified the treaty.

Before the day was out, 50 states as different as Indonesia and Ireland had put their names to the treaty; others can sign later if they like.

"The heroic survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki - the hibakusha - continue to remind us of the devastating humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons", Guterres said.

Nuclear powers say a ban won't work.

The President of the General Assembly said "It will raise awareness about the risks of nuclear weapons". Because It's a close USA ally and it's protected by the US nuclear umbrella.

The treaty, which would ban the developing, stocking and threat of use of nuclear weapons, will apply only to signatory States.
