Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India shares Myanmar's concern about "extremist violence" in its Rakhine state where security forces have been engaged in a bloody battle against Rohingya insurgents, forcing thousands of people to flee neighbouring Bangladesh and India. PM Modi also assured the citizens of Myanmar that visas will be granted to all those who wish to visit India.

Naming Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Rabindranath Tagore and Bahadur Shah Zafar, he said Myanmar had become the "second home" for those who had to leave their own homes during the freedom struggle.

India has in the past helped provide humanitarian assistance in refugee camps set up in Rakhine province following earlier clashes - always carefully ensuring that its aid reached both the Buddhist and Rohingya Muslim communities.
