Everton boss Ronald Koeman seeks to ease expectations: Let's be realistic Everton boss Ronald Koeman seeks to ease expectations: Let's be realistic

Manager Ronald Koeman has been backed heavily in the transfer market and spent around B£90million to sign a host of players.

Everton have been busy too, bringing in Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Wayne Rooney, Sandro Ramirez and Davy Klaasen.

And the Toffees are not finished there, as negotiations continue with Swansea over B£50m-rated playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Toffees have impressed in pre-season too, winning two and drawing two of their last four games this summer, and took four points off Stoke in the Premier League in 2016/17. "That is what we would like to show to everybody".

"I know the expectations are higher than last season, but I always look to be realistic", said Koeman.

"But of course it is hard with the big clubs".

"Okay, I believe if we get the picture of the last season we are stronger but being stronger than last season does not mean you will win against the big six because they also will be more strong than last season".

"It is hard still because we really have one striker".

But the manager concedes that, for all Everton's shrewd business, it may only allow them to stand still, at least in terms of league position. "We can improve and spend money but everyone can improve is spending money".

The downside for Everton has been the loss of top scorer Romelu Lukaku to United - albeit in a deal potentially worth B£90m - while the future of midfielder Ross Barkley remains uncertain.

Arsenal made the flawless start to their latest attempt to win a first Premier League trophy in 14 seasons through £58 million signing Lacazette.

Koeman said: "To replace Lukaku is really hard". "I don't say "impossible" but 25 goals is a lot. We brought some players in but we would like to bring some more in".

The Premier League match between Everton and Stoke will be broadcast live on CNBC.

"When I came here of course it was a different situation", said Koeman.

"In the Premier League if you think you have an easy start you will pay for that".

Stoke could complete the signing of Bruno Martins Indi before the game but it will not be done in time for him to feature.

If Kompany stays fit, City's status as Premier League favourites looks understandable but if he gets injured again, it might not matter how many goals they score at the other end.

"We know at home that we have that fantastic support and hopefully we can get a good win this Saturday". Let's hope we get an agreement as soon as possible.

However, in summer recruit Darren Fletcher and the understated Joe Allen, the Potters will have their own fairly dynamic midfield duo and will aim to disrupt Everton's flow on home turf.
