The man, aged around 19 and with a history of psychological problems, also said he had been in contact with someone from the so-called Islamic State group who had encouraged him, the source added.

A judicial official says a man holding a knife said "Allahu akbar" - the Arabic phrase for "God is great" - and tried to access a secure zone.

The man was quickly subdued by soldiers and taken into custody, while police cleared out visitors in order to conduct a search of the entire area.

According to the company that runs the Eiffel Tower, a man tried to force his way through one of the security checks at the entrance at about 11.30pm (local time) on Saturday.

The incident at the world-famous tourist site was initially treated as a criminal matter, but was later designated a counter-terrorism case because of the suspect's statements to police and his apparent radicalization, the source said.

Apple leak confirms 'iPhone 8' face unlock

A spokesman for the French prosecutor's office confirmed Sunday that an antiterrorist investigation was opened after an interrogation of the suspect, a young Frenchman of Mauritanian origin who, according to preliminary data, professes Islamic extremism.

Security source said the man wanted to harm soldiers.

A screen near the bottom of the tower displayed a message welcoming Brazilian star Neymar to the club.

The intruder was wearing a Paris Saint-Germain football shirt.

More than 100 other people have been killed in other Islamist terrorist attacks in France during the past two-and-a-half years.
