Roger Federer has claimed a record ninth title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle thanks to a comprehensive victory over Alexander Zverev in Sunday's final.

Federer, who won an 18th major at January's Australian Open, skipped the entire clay court season to preserve his powers for the grass campaign.

Federer in his comeback match was defeated in Stuttgart, last week, but in this one he was aggressive from the start and getting the break in the first game. Federer advanced when Khachanov lifted a backhand long on match point.

The German defeated France's Richard Gasquet in the second semi-final, 4-6 6-4 6-3.

"It was perhaps not always very lovely to watch, but it's good to be in the final in the second tournament after my return", the Swiss said afterwards.

Federer had words of affection for Zverev, who won their semifinal in Halle past year. According to odds makers, the 35-year-old Federer enters the 2017 Wimbledon as the favourite, closely followed reigning champion Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Federer, whose first success at Halle came in 2003, has won 92 career titles from 140 finals.

"The future belongs to him", Federer said. Make sure I serve well, because he can go through spells where he can serve big.

Federer produced an imperious display against world number 12 Zverev, who is regarded as one of the world's most promising players and reached the top 10 this year after winning three titles.

"I was a little uncertain about a player I don't know too well", he said of Khachanov.

"It has been a hard year with a lot of practice, training and rehab so I am very happy to be back on the court", he said.

Federer is through to the semifinals in Halle for the 13th consecutive time, with his two quarterfinal losses at the event coming in 2000-2001.
