Hundreds of households to be evacuated in wake of London tower fire

Erik Tate | 24 June, 2017, 01:04

Camden Council will evacuate 161 households from a tower block tonight amid fire safety concerns.

Proceeds from a clash between London soccer giants Arsenal and Chelsea will go to support people caught up in the Grenfell Tower fire, the Football Association said yesterday.

Colin Beattie, Musselburgh MSP, wrote to East Lothian Council this week to seek confirmation that the cladding used on the tower was not used on any buildings in the county.

"Until the panels have all been removed, we will carry out 24/7 fire safety patrols on the estate's corridors to reassure residents and carry out enhanced fire safety checks".

"The Grenfell fire changes everything - we need to do everything we can to keep residents safe".

'This means that we need to move residents from their homes and into temporary accommodation.

Taplow resident Shirley Phillips said she had only heard about the evacuation on Sky News, adding: "I've got a little bag together".

The revelation comes after today's confirmation from the Metropolitan Police that the Hotpoint fridge, model number FF175BP, started the fire.

"Camden Council has decided it will immediately begin preparing to remove these external cladding panels from the five tower blocks on the Chalcots Estate".

Russian Federation probe causes tension among top officials at Justice Department
Rosenstein has been overseeing the Russian Federation probe since shortly after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself. The official demanded anonymity because the official was not authorized to be named discussing the deliberations.

It came as four more victims of Grenfell Tower were formally identified, taking the known victims of the fire to nine.

Camden is one of the councils in England which has learned that combustible cladding has been placed on buildings during renovation projects, though they had ordered non-flammable cladding.

Tauranga mayor Greg Brownless said: "Naturally it's concerning if any of our buildings are coated in the same material as the Grenfell Tower but fortunately we do not have many high rises in the city".

Hotpoint said Friday that "words can not express our sorrow at this awful tragedy" and added it was working with authorities to examine the appliance.

The London Fire Brigade said it was attending a tumble dryer fire once a day on average, and consumer watchdog Which? said dryers were the second biggest cause of house fires. Along with Manchester, only Camden and Plymouth have been identified among this list.

The number of people to have died, including those classed as missing presumed dead, remains at 79. Premier Inn said Friday it had "concerns" about the material used on some of its buildings, though it is different from the type used at Grenfell Tower.

They the owners of these Fridge Freezers to complete a form and "we will update when further information is available".

Edward Strange said: "We've had two fires here since the cladding was put on and both fires didn't spread so I don't see what the problem is".
