This approval rating is the lowest recorded in CBS News Polls since he became president. One-third of Americans now say his approach to the investigations has made their opinion of him worse, pollsters found.

The CBS poll found that 63 percent of Americans disapprove of how Trump has handled the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.

CBS News noted that more than half of Republicans call the investigation a political distraction that should be put aside.

Real Clear Politics average of major polls, which includes the latest results from Rasmussen Reports, shows 40 percent approve of the job President Trump is doing compared to 53 percent who disapprove.

May had called the election in order to consolidate her mandate to negotiate Britain's exit from the Europe Union. The gamble failed, with the Conservative party losing its strong polling lead over the course of the campaign.

Remember, rank-and-file GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill have a very strong incentive to toe the party line and follow Trump's lead: the most rabid contingents of the Republican base support the president, and GOP officials who break ranks risk a backlash - or a primary challenge.

The interviews for the poll were conducted by telephone from June 15-18 among a random sample of 1,117 adults nationwide, according to CBS. Another 27% said the investigation is serious but not as serious as other issues. The poll did, however, find that most Republicans felt Trump was being unfairly castigated, which reportedly fueled their support of the president even more. Some 65 percent of Democrats think Trump is criticized more than other recent presidents, and 44 percent believe that this makes them more likely to question him. A majority of Americans, 56 percent, think Mueller's investigation will be impartial and that Trump should not do anything to try to block it. The poll says that 44 percent of all Americans, but just 14 percent of Republicans, believe Russian Federation interfered to help elect Trump. Overall, most Americans (57 percent) believe Comey more.

The President disputed former FBI Director James Comey's account of their private meetings, and who Americans believe is driven by partisanship.

Technology journalist Jack Schofield pointed out that the Rasmussen poll is "probably wrong", has a statistical bias towards Republicans and is only rated C+, according to FiveThirtyEight.
