USA-Russia Reports say Mueller probe now examining possible obstruction
20 June, 2017, 01:22
Trump appeared to confirm he was being investigated for obstruction in a tweet on Friday that read: "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"
Trump may have been referring to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who wrote a highly critical memo about Comey.
The Post, this week, reported that Robert Mueller, who is overseeing the FBI's probe into Russia's meddling in last year's United States presidential election and possible links with the Trump campaign, has expanded his inquiry to probe whether Trump obstructed justice by firing James Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation chief.
Rosenstein has been overseeing the Russian Federation probe since shortly after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself.
The probe is being led by special counsel Robert Mueller, who was appointed by Rosenstein.
Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law and one of his favored advisers, as well as other business associates close to the president and his campaign are being looked into by Mueller, anonymous sources told the newspaper. It was unclear whether his tweet about being under investigation was based on direct knowledge or new media reports that suggest Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing Comey. But then Trump's legal team denied that the president's tweet was a confirmation that is under investigation.
Mueller continues to hire a team of lawyers, and with FBI investigators is gathering information that is widely expected to lead to a formal investigation into whether President Trump attempted to interfere in the investigation. But Trump, as president, has the authority to fire Rosenstein, a career justice department civil servant who has worked under five presidents.
The preservation order covers any information involving Russian Federation or Ukraine, and records on former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, former foreign policy adviser Carter Page, business partner Rick Gates, informal adviser and friend Roger Stone, and Flynn, according to a memo obtained by the Times. The official demanded anonymity because the official was not authorized to be named discussing the deliberations. If Trump begins firing such people and the GOP's political position keeps eroding-pay attention to the special election in Georgia on Tuesday-maybe more Republicans will start to wonder if it's time for President Pence.

Vice President Mike Pence has also hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe.
Trump also lashed out at the media, on a day that aides hoped would be focused on his decision to undo some of Barack Obama's detente with Cuba.
"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked. "I can go around them".
USA president Donald Trump appeared to confirm he is under investigation for obstruction of justice, as he lashed out at what he described as a "witch hunt" against him.
Yet Trump's angry tweets on Friday underscored the near-impossible challenge his advisers and legal team have in trying to get him to avoid weighing in on an active probe. Sad!" he wrote. "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great.
