It has been used for almost a decade, but today, the lead developer posted on gtaforums.com that they received an official Cease & Desist letter from Take-Two, the parent company for Rockstar and the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
Rockstar has added full cinematic editors to Grand Theft Auto V since its release, which enables users to use tools within the game to create films and skits.
The reply by the makers of modding tool is below, they had thought about going to court and prove the tool under fair usage, but instant they dropped the idea due to amount of time consumed in the process.
On June 5, 2017, the team received an official cease and desist, with the posting quoting one line from the letter.
Yes, we could. But we decided not to. In response the team has chose to follow Take-Two's order and and stop distributing OpenIV altogether. "Spending the precious time to restore status quo is of no use and all the money in the world can't compensate the loss of time", said the group. "Yes, we could. But we decided not to", GooD-NTS said. As such, the OpenIV modding tool has been declared as illegal.
The reaction from the gaming community was as swift as it was one-sided in its near universal condemnation of the takedown. Or we could discuss how petulant legal threats of this kind are a detriment to creation and the operations of running a creative endeavor.
There's already a petition on Change.org asking Take-Two to pull back this decision, but as with most online petitions, it's unlikely to have much of an impact. Given the extreme backlash, whatever harm was caused to gamers themselves by the modding tool must be minimal at worst. That certainly seems odd, especially given the size of the company behind it. Majority thought this happened just because Rockstar had planned to bring Red Dead Redemption to the PC before the release of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Now, the game's recent review rating on Steam is "Mixed" after previously being listed as "Mostly Positive".
