Zack Barth, the University of Texas at Austin graduate and Texas representative's staffer who was shot at Wednesday morning's congressional baseball practice, is okay, according to Texas Rep. Roger Williams. The shooter's bullets struck Barth, 24, and four others. Video from the scene broadcast on CNN showed Williams being taken from the field in a stretcher.
Moments earlier, a reporter asked the politician if the Republican congressional team was going to hold one more practice before the game. He said Barth works as a legislative correspondent.
Zack Barth graduated in 2015, with a BA in government. "Thank you for the thoughts and prayers", Barth wrote on Facebook hours after the incident.
U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey of Fort Worth, the lone Texan on the Democrats' congressional baseball team, tweeted his support and prayers after news of the shooting came out.
In a statement Wednesday, Williams said that at about 7 a.m. this morning, a gunman arrived at the practice and opened fire.
"I don't think it was a Republican or Democratic issue, but I think he had an issue", Williams said. Reps. Joe Barton of Ennis - whose two sons also were there - and Mike Conaway of Midland escaped unharmed. "Some of us were on the ground", Barton said. "It was very scary".
