President Trump To Mark Memorial Day With Visit To Arlington National Cemetery How Trump and Pence Are Honoring America's Fallen Heroes on Memorial Day

"To every Gold Star family who honors us with your presence, you lost sons, daughters, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers ... they each had their own stories, their own attractive dreams ... they were all angels sent to us by God", he said. "They fought and they died in the great and noble act of loyalty and love to their families and to our country".

He addressed USA service members stationed at a naval base in Sicily as "warriors of freedom" and the "patriots who keep the fires of liberty burning".

Trump added: "To the entire Kelly family, today, 300 million American hearts are joined together with you".

Noting that "I always call him 'general, '" Mr. Trump said Mr. Kelly "understands more than most ever could, or ever will, the wounds and burdens of war ..." And it's important for Americans to remember those that are no longer here with us, because they're not here.

Before the remarks, Trump laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, touching it for a long moment before stepping away.

Without a word, he slowly laid the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

Instead of endless war-memorial platitudes, Mr. Trump, who attended a military secondary school, personalized his part of the ceremony.

London mayor says Trump will not 'divide our communities'
Asked if Trump was criticizing the mayor of London because he is Muslim, Sanders said that was "utterly ridiculous". Trump's comments caused outrage among British officials, many of whom call London home.

Participating in the somber, annual observance Monday at Arlington National Cemetery, Trump recounted the stories of Green Beret Capt. Andrew D. Byers of Colorado Springs and Christopher D. Horton of the Oklahoma National Guard as Byers' tearful parents and Horton's emotional widow looked on. "We will always be there".

"They each had their own names, their own stories, their own lovely dreams", said Trump in his address. Bob Dole, who suffered permanently crippling injuries as a member of the 10th Mountain Division in a battle with the German army in Italy in World War II.

In the speech, Trump paid tribute to Army Spc.

But they also admitted to some frustration over the confusion in many people's minds about the meaning of Memorial Day.

Before speaking to a crowd at the Arlington National Cemetery, the president sang along to the National Anthem. "We do not know where they came from, who they left behind, or what they hoped to be, but we do know what they did".

After the ceremony, the president visited with families in Section 60 of the cemetery, where most of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan are buried.
