May backs Khan as Trump continues attacks

Theresa May 'Enough is enough' Trump sons defend his criticism of London mayor

Like any President of the United States, one of Donald Trump's first reactions to a terror attack in the capital city of a close ally was to attack that city's mayor.

President Trump fired off a series of critical tweets over Mr Khan's handling of the London Bridge terror attack, mocking the mayor's comments that there was "no reason to be alarmed" over armed police on the streets.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders on Monday said Trump was stressing the importance of national security and maintained the president had not misrepresented what Khan had said.

Mr Khan's spokesperson had described the first round of presidential tweets as "ill-informed" - and said they had deliberately taken the mayor's remarks out of context. Trump quoted Khan out of context in order to attack the mayor politically.

Khan, who initially chose to ignore Trump's comments on the ground that he had more important things to do, called on the May government to cancel the proposed visit.

Trump said he had spoken with British Prime Minister Theresa May to express America's "unwavering support" and offer USA assistance as the British government works to protect its citizens and bring the guilty to justice.

"It is still not known whether the attackers were British citizens or immigrants and therefore whether a Trump-style freeze on entry of people from certain nations might have prevented the violence by three knife-wielding assailants, who were killed by police", the article reads.

"The United States Conference of Mayors stands today united with Mayor Sadiq Khan of London and the people of London".

As reported in the Guardian, Khan appeared on Channel 4 News last evening, and said that Trump's state visit should not go ahead. "Why would you want to stop them coming?"

President Trump has been widely criticized around the world for his attack on Sadiq Khan, and for trying to use the London attack to justify his proposed travel ban.

"What have you got against them?"

The Trump administration is expected to take the proposal to the Supreme Court next week.

Mr Trump has since tweeted that Mr Khan had to "think fast" and was making a "pathetic exuse" with his explanation. "We are not going to let Donald Trump divide our communities".

When asked if Mr Trump was wrong about his assessment of the mayor, the prime minister said Mr Khan was doing a good job and it was wrong to say anything else.

"The Mayors of the US who haven't had a terrorist attack know full well that in today's age of terrorist actions, domestic and worldwide, an attack could happen in their city".
