Canada seeks tough line on Boeing Super Hornets but sends mixed message

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan used a major speech Wednesday to blast American firm Boeing for picking a trade spat with Bombardier Canada seeks tough line on Boeing Super Hornets but sends mixed message

"It is not the behaviour of a trusted partner", Sajjan told industry representatives Wednesday at the CANSEC defence trade show in Ottawa.

"We're hopeful things can be resolved, but we have to stand up for Canadian interests", stated Sajjan, who became the first Sikh to hold the title of Canadian minister of national defense when he was appointed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet in 2015.

Canada's defense minister repeated a threat Wednesday to cancel the purchase of 18 fighter jets from Boeing Co. because of the company's trade complaint against Canadian plane maker Bombardier.

Sajjan called on Boeing to abandon the anti-dumping challenge it has launched against Canadian plane maker Bombardier, saying Ottawa was disappointed by the US company's behavior.

Boeing's complaint also prompted Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland to order a review of the planned Super Hornet deal, saying "there will be consequences" for Boeing. Louis F/A-18 Super Hornet fighters.

"The Liberals' decision to pull our CF-18s out of the fight against ISIS, their discredited sole-source fighter jet purchase, and their failure to advance important procurement projects all suggest that Justin Trudeau has a naïve view of our military and expects other countries to do the heavy lifting", he said. "As you all know, one of those is the exploration of an interim fleet of fighter jets". "It is not the behavior we expect of a trusted partner, and we call on Boeing to withdraw it".

"The interim fleet procurement requires a trusted industry partner".

"We are following a normal process available to USA companies, we're following USA laws", Day told Radio Canada International Wednesday.

Canada had announced plans to buy 18 Super Hornet fighter jets as a stopgap measure to beef up its legacy fleet of CF-18 fighter jets - also produced by Boeing - because it didn't have enough jets to meet its NORAD and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation obligations, Sajjan said.

Ottawa is now reviewing defense procurements with the USA aerospace giant, Sajjan added, which include 18 Boeing Super Hornet jets. Boeing has 560 suppliers in Canada.

Sajjan's office refused to comment on the matter Thursday.

"Boeing has provided reliable solutions to Canada's defence and security needs, and we respect the mutual trust we have established with the Canadian Armed Forces".
