Senator John Cornyn on Short List to Lead FBI

Warren Dawson | 16 May, 2017, 10:09

Senate Democrats likely will stall on whomever Trump nominates while Republican senators such as Susan Collins of ME and Lindsey Graham of SC have voiced concerns over nominating someone to the position who works in a partisan environment. He was made acting director of the agency after Comey was sacked.

Cornyn, 65, is the Senate majority whip and formerly served as a Texas attorney general and state supreme court justice.

Luttig, the general counsel for Boeing Corp., is viewed as a conservative legal powerhouse from his tenure as a judge on the 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals and his time as a Justice Department lawyer.

Of course, this raises the question (remote a possibility as it may be) of what happens to Cornyn's Senate seat if he were to be nominated and confirmed. Whoever is selected is appointed to a 10-year term, although they can be removed by the president.

Several of those named could be considered outside shots: For example, while Thompson criticized Comey's handling of the Clinton emails, he also co-authored a Washington Post op-ed last October calling for Trump's electoral defeat.

After the news broke of Comey's ouster, Graham said he supported the move.

Fisher is a former assistant US attorney general in charge of the Justice Department's criminal division and is now a partner in Latham & Watkins' Washington, D.C. office. The Texan's seat is safe for as long as he wants it but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is gearing up for reelection in 2020 and has shown no signs of giving up the top leadership post, meaning Cornyn could be waiting almost a decade for a shot at the top job. That means Cornyn is on the verge of hitting a professional ceiling, so the 10-year term of Federal Bureau of Investigation director might be a logical next move.

"That's a ridiculous position", Cornyn said May 10, the day after Comey was sacked. "I told him I was interested in having a conversation and, basically, that's what we did", Cornyn said. In an interview Friday, she said she had no desire to censor Cornyn, but rather to represent the values of the school. John Cornyn to speak at Saturday's graduation in Houston.

One protester said he would press Cornyn to "assign a non-partisan independent commission to investigate potential Russian election interference".

Libby Hambleton, a spokeswoman for Cornyn, said in an email that the senator was honored to have been invited to speak, but that he "respects the administration's decision and looks forward to continuing to engage with the university in the future". But the FBI mission has changed drastically since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, with the bureau now as much a part of the nation's intelligence apparatus as it is a law enforcement body.

The Trump administration is said to be considering close to a dozen candidates for the position, including Gowdy, formerly a federal prosecutor who sits on the House Intelligence Committee. He's held multiple leadership positions, including overseeing the FBI's national security branch and its Washington field office.
