Pakistan has contested in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Monday that the petition filed by India seeking halt to implementation of death sentence awarded to spy Kulbhushan Jadhav is inadmissible.

On May 8, India moved the ICJ against the death penalty, alleging Pakistan violated the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations by repeatedly denying it consular access to Mr Jadhav.

While India presented its argument over 90 minutes, Pakistan, which claims that Jadhav is an agent of India's external intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), took less than an hour.

The urgent hearing comes after the ICJ last week stayed Jadhav's execution.

DG South Asia in Foreign Office Dr Faisal in his argument at ICJ in the Hague, Netherlands on Monday said according to the Vienna Convention this court has no jurisdiction to hear such case.

Government sources also countered Pakistan's claims in court that India had not clarified on Jadhav's passport, nationality and kept silent for a year since Pakistan sought assistance with the investigations.

At the outset, Qureshi said India was invoking the jurisdiction of the court for "political theatre" and described as "bizzare" the description of Jadhav's trial as a kangaroo court.

US, European officials to discuss proposed expansion of in-flight laptop ban
European airport security measures are closely aligned with American measures, and US aviation security has had its own failures. The officials had asked that the USA and Europe continue to cooperate on a "joint response to shared threats".

The Indian national, who had been arrested on March 3 past year and sentenced to death on allegations of espionage and subversive activities, had been framed on the basis of confessional statements extracted from him when he was in Pakistan's military custody, Salve added.

Dismissing India's contention that it invoked the jurisdiction of the court because of the "imminent" possibility of execution of Jadhav, Qureshi said the court was bound to settle disputes between countries peacefully and not waste time on issues sought to be raised for political goal. Islamabad has also not responded to a visa application by JadavĀ“s parents seeking to travel to Pakistan to visit their son, he said.

Indian officials maintain, New Delhi had approached the ICJ not on the merits of the case but on two basic issues -the Vienna Convention on Consular Access - not being adhered to and human rights of Jadhav not being respected by Pakistan.

The hearing focused on India's request for so-called "provisional measures" that can be granted at short notice to ensure a dispute between states does not deteriorate during full ICJ proceedings, which typically take several years. We have a long border with India where millions of people reside.

Mr Mittal insisted Pakistan had failed to respond to Indian demands for information about the case, snubbing requests for documents including the charge sheet, and had failed to provide Jadhav with consular access.

Pakistan claims to have arrested Jadhav from its restive Balochistan province.

"India is trying to make its best effort to use the worldwide laws to make sure that Jadhav is not unfairly tried".
