Cyberattack havoc could grow as work week begins

Arthur Frazier | 16 May, 2017, 10:12

Vicente Diaz, a security analyst at Kaspersky, said big companies would have spent the weekend implementing such measures, but smaller firms without a dedicated security team could still suffer from the malware.

That was the chilling prediction made yesterday by Ron Wainwright, the English-born head of the EU's crimefighting organisation Europol.

Ransomwear attacks work by locking the computer and encrypting all the data. But many users did not apply the software patch, AP reported.

- How can people protect their computers?

The indiscriminate attack, which began Friday, struck banks, hospitals and government agencies, exploiting known vulnerabilities in old Microsoft computer operating systems.

The patches won't do any good for machines that have already been hit. "And I think it's going to grow", said former director of National Intelligence, James Clapper in an interview with ABC.

Telefónica: Spanish authorities confirmed the Spanish telecom company Telefónica was one of the targets, though the attack affected only some computers and did not compromise the security of clients' information.

The first thing you need to know about WanaCrypt0r 2.0 (also known as WannaCry, Wcry, or Wanna Decryptor) is that it's a type of malicious software called ransomware.

NHS Grampian said it remains "completely confident" no patient data was accessed in the ransomware attack, which hit 13 health boards across the country and countless nationwide, leaving some with a backlog of postponed appointments to contend with.

"Remarkably few payments so far have been made, so most people are not paying this", Wainwright said.

The official world record is now held by Kenyan Dennis Kimetto, at 2:02:57, set at the 2014 Berlin Marathon . Two months after Bannister, two more runners clocked a mile at under four minutes.

WannaCry has already caused massive disruption around the globe.

England's National Health Service said 47 organisations providing care had been hit and on Sunday afternoon seven hospitals were continuing to divert patients from the emergency room.

Sir Michael told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "We never comment on the different systems, obviously for reasons of security, that our submarines use but our vanguard submarines I can absolutely assure you, are safe and operate in isolation when they are out on patrol, and I have complete confidence in our nuclear deterrent".

In contrast to reports from several European security firms, a researcher at the Tripwire company on the U.S. West Coast said late Saturday that the attack could be diminishing. State media reported that digital payment systems at some gas stations were offline, forcing customers to pay cash.

The ransomware exploited a security flaw in Microsoft's Windows operating system.

"These ransomware attacks have been on the rise over the last three years, it wasn't exactly something that was a shock - what was surprising is the scale of this one".

Interior Ministry: The Russian Interior Ministry acknowledged a ransomware attack on its computers, adding that less than 1% of computers were affected.

Victims have paid about $30 000 in ransom so far, with the total expected to rise substantially next week, said Tom Robinson, chief operating officer and co-founder of Elliptic Enterprises, a ransomware consultant that works with banks and companies in the United Kingdom, the U.S. and Europe.

Consumers who have up-to-date software are protected from this ransomware.
