Liberals win tight poll in Canada's British Columbia, lose majority

Erik Tate | 15 May, 2017, 17:57

Two-in-five voters (41%) say that they don't like the leader of the party they voted for, but felt the party seemed like the best option at this time. What do we want British Columbia to look like in 4 years, in 10 years, in 40 years?

"They reminded us that we need to be humble".

"I want to work with him, I really do, and I've tried and I've continued to try but he's got to control his temper".

Horgan did an fantastic job despite being discounted by many commentators - bringing the NDP tantalizingly close to a majority government and still on the brink of possibly becoming premier. "It is my intention to continue to lead British Columbia".

But he said the Greens, who do not accept political donations from corporations or unions, are committed to removing them entirely from B.C. politics. "Now is not the time for those discussions, now is the time for Greens across North America to celebrate", he told a cheering crowd.

Several of them attracted Premier Christy Clark's support, including a proposal to ban mandatory high heels for restaurant servers and legislation that requires post-secondary institutions to write and maintain policies to prevent sexual violence on campus.

Mr. Weaver picked up his party's first seat in the 2013 election - unseating a Liberal cabinet minister - and in at least two other ridings drew more than 30 per cent of the vote that year.

One University of B.C. political science professor says there are places where the Green vote helped the NDP at the expense of the Liberals.

The Liberals have produced consecutive balanced budgets, the province's economy is buoyant and Clark's job-creation record is a strong one.

Out of 44,092 eligible voters, 16,092 votes were reported after 75 polling stations counted ballets.

Party leader Andrew Weaver was re-elected in his Oak Bay-Gordon Head riding with more than half the votes, which led to a loud celebration at party headquarters in Victoria. Although he is disappointed, he said he was pleased and humbled at the result.

Weaver is hoping to get to the magic number of four B.C. Green MLAs to reach official party status, a scenario that could also make the former climate scientist a key power broker in the legislature if either the BC Liberals or New Democrats fail to get enough seats to form a majority government.

Or it could be a B.C. Liberal MLA missing a confidence vote for the government to be defeated.

Poll workers had to intervene when a man approached Clark yelling insults. Clark endorsed the project after the federal government's approval, but Horgan has promised to use "every tool in the toolbox" to stop it.

However, if the results are confirmed, Harrison said the Liberals and New Democrats may be forced to compromise with the Greens or face another election. "John Horgan has already signalled the basis of the deal".

There are 87 seats in the legislature.

A minority government occurs when no single party in an election wins a majority of the seats.

The BC Greens scored a major breakthrough.
