"President Trump emphasized the need to work together to end the conflict in Syria, in particular, underscoring the need for Russian Federation to rein in the Assad regime, Iran, and Iranian proxies", said a White House readout of the meeting Wednesday between Trump and Sergey Lavrov.

The meeting with Lavrov was the highest-level public contact between Trump and the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin since Trump took office on January 20.

Since the end of Obama's presidency in January, the United States has gradually withdrawn from the diplomatic process, leaving Russian Federation to take the lead.

He drew attention to the fact that the new administration and U.S. President Donald Trump are "businesslike and love practical results".

The Syrian leader meanwhile, praised Russia's peacemaking efforts, in particular, the Astana peace talks, where Moscow proposed the creation of such de-escalation zones in agreement with the other guarantor-states - Iran and Turkey.

The primary goal of de-escalation is supposed to be to allow humanitarian aid to flow through to civilians.

ACC and Notre Dame Extend Partnership

Over the past six years, Moscow and Washington have sparred multiple times over the conflict in Syria, especially concerning Assad's fate.

"We will look at the proposal, see if it can work", Pentagon chief Jim Mattis said Monday. Trump said during his election campaign that he sought closer ties with Russian Federation but tensions grew after USA air strikes against a Syrian airfield in April in response to a chemical weapons attack that Washington blamed on Assad.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday emphasized his desire to build a better relationship between the United States and Russian Federation, the White House said.

According to Russian defense official, the fact that the de-escalation agreement was supported by the United Nations, the USA and Saudi Arabia guaranteed its implementation.

After talks Wednesday, the two diplomats will again meet Thursday in Fairbanks, Alaska for the Arctic Council meeting, an intergovernmental forum for cooperation on the environment, oil and mining, shipping, fisheries and tourism.
