A helicopter unit with the Orange County Sheriff's Department confirmed multiple sharks were swimming near the San Clemente coastline in California on Wednesday, May 10.

"Attention in the water: This is the Orange County Sheriff's Department", came the announcement aboard the sheriff's chopper Wednesday over Capistrano Beach in Dana Point and San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente. Signs have been posted warning swimmers and surfers of the risk and fishermen have been asked not to do anything disruptive to the sharks.

One of the sharks was described as being 10 feet (three metres) long.

Due to increased shark activity & the safety of our recreational beach users, sharks, & Marine Safety personnel a new advisory is in place! This increase has been mainly driven by protection from fishing pressure (juveniles end up as bycatch in fishing nets) beginning in 1999 in California, and the recovery of marine mammals whose numbers have been climbing since they gained US protection in 1973, Lowe said.

Although we may see more of adult sharks than we're used to, Lowe says sightings of young sharks off our waters is not unusual.

Shark sightings are not uncommon in California, but attacks are rare.

"The report we got from the sheriff's was very similar to the reports we've had before with the juveniles in the area at Beach Road", he said.

Almost a year ago, a woman was bitten by a shark while swimming off Corona del Mar, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) to the north of the Wednesday sighting.

"Sharks live in the ocean - anytime you venture out in the ocean, you have to know other creatures live in the ocean", he said.

'Populations are coming back.

The video opens with a close-up shot of a great white shark swimming solo in a turquoise ocean.

'They didn't migrate south in the winter, which they usually did, ' Lowe said.
