In memory of the late astronaut, a supply ship bearing his name arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) on Saturday.

The spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral air force station in Florida on Tuesday.

The unmanned commercial spacecraft, on its seventh contracted resupply mission for NASA, was grappled by a robotic arm operated by astronauts inside the space station at 6:05 a.m. EDT (1005 GMT), the US space agency said.

The mission is Orbital ATK's seventh contracted commercial resupply services (CRS) mission, and its third launch atop an Atlas V rocket from Florida.

This NASA TV handout frame grab shows the Orbital ATK Cygnus cargo craft at the end of the robotic arm at the International Space Station on April 22, 2017.

Astronaut Peggy Whitson joined Pesquet at the controls as the spacecraft orbited earth about 250 miles above Germany.

NASA says Whitson on Monday will officially set the U.S. record for most cumulative days in space, surpassing astronaut Jeff Williams' record of 534 days.

On April 24, the US President will congratulate Peggy Whitson for her outstanding career as an astronaut.

Also aboard the S.S. John Glenn is equipment to be installed outside the space station during a spacewalk scheduled for May 12, 38 CubeSats (many built by university students from around the world) to be deployed from the station's Japanese airlock (or from the Cygnus itself) and a new advanced plant growth habitat. The next day, a SpaceX Dragon cargo ship is expected to arrive, followed by a Russian Progress freighter June 14.

Whitson arrived at the space station November 19, 2016, and is sharing her experiences in space on Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook.

The last time when a two-person crew was sent or the ISS was in April 2003, when Ed Lu of NASA and Yuri Malenchenko of Roscosmos were boosted into the orbit using a Soyuz TMA-2.
