Facebook's new camera could make you question reality

Devin Neal | 20 April, 2017, 09:40

Facebook F8 is an annual conference held by Facebook for developers and entrepreneurs who develop products and provide services on the website.

Giving a fresh impetus to its Augmented reality (AR) dream, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has outlined a new augmented reality platform for developers to encourage AR camera effects.

Facebook is getting better at acknowledging "the many, many unintended consequences of their actions" and "the power and reach of their platform" Wood said, including its handling of fake news on the social media site.

According to Zuckerberg, Facebook's future prospects focus on augmented reality based on technology that overlays digital imagery onto the real world like Snapchat's signature camera filters.

Facebook states that its Messenger Platform has more than 1.2 billion people, 100,000 developers and 100,000 monthly active bots, and 2 billion messages are sent between people and businesses on Messenger every month, so it's no wonder they're making major new add ons and improvements to their ever popular platform.

A recent push by Facebook to add camera features to its suite of smartphone apps will help the company popularize similar features, Zuckerberg said.

AR Studio, now open for beta applications, can be used to create masks, scripted effects, animated frames and other AR technologies that react to movement, the environment or interactions during Live videos.

The company also launched the "Places Graph", providing free access to data on more than 140 million places around the world. Facebook's new virtual reality app will make it feel like you're in the same room as friends, or on the same beach, garden or park - the new VR app can transport your avatar anywhere. Mark Zuckerberg kicked proceedings off by unveiling the company's ambitious plans for augmented reality.

Facebook Spaces is available in beta now for Oculus Rift and Touch and can be downloaded from the Oculus Store. It has also released the Frame Studio that will let the developers create frames for photos and videos.

"While the announcement seems pretty innocuous, make no mistake: Facebook is, once again, putting itself into direct competition with Google and Apple, " he said.
