No Matter What Happens, Girls Was Amazing This Season

The episode managed to acknowledge a show's deep roots while excavating them.

Overall, the pair have few regrets looking back at the series.

The final episode wasn't a traditional ending, with Dunham wanting to do something unexpected.

One of the few images from Girls' series finale that HBO released prior to Sunday's broadcast was of Lena Dunham's Hannah sitting alone in a suburban NY diner looking defeated (see above). Most movies and TV shows end with moms choosing life-and sometimes, as in "Juno", choosing adoption.

Loreen hands her glass of wine to Hannah, who then goes inside to attend a crying baby.

When Girls started in 2012 I, too, was stumbling through dating. Part of this, I realize now, was because I was 23 when it premiered.

As for the show's legacy, I don't yet know. I had to, right?

"I'm a quitter", Hannah says as she towels herself off after getting out of the tub.

Here's the question: can we finally unlatch from "Girls" for good? Everyone grows up on their own. What was the show to do once we knew that some kind of insane sexual act or drug and alcohol induced night would eventually happen? But Loreen, who knows what it's like to give your all to somebody who has another agenda, tells her prioritizing her own happiness could be the best thing for her and Hannah's friendship.

Goodbye, Girls. Here's to being Women in all our nuanced brilliance and fucked-up-ness.

It was the first time North Korea had shown the missiles - which have a range of more than 1,000km - at a military parade. Navy strike group including the USS Carl Vinson aircraft was sent to the region ahead of the parade to monitor activity.

Tell Us: What did you think of the Girls finale? Especially in its later seasons, Girls fell victim to numerous same tropes that it aimed to defy in its first years, with characters pairing up repeatedly (Ray and Shoshanna), others overstaying their welcome as crucial components on the show (still Ray and Shoshanna), and even characters like Adam being driven to fringes of usefulness on the show with the overwhelming whiff of fan service plaguing many of his final scenes. Would any of the others, much less younger Marnie, have stuck by Hannah's side during this time? Hannah's newfound mothering instincts kick in, giving the girl her trousers - of course, it wouldn't be a proper close to the series without a shot of Hannah in her underwear - and telling her that she's a safe person who can help her. But instead, she learns the girl ran away from home because her mom wanted her to do her homework and she wanted to visit her boyfriend instead. Character development has been great over the years and I have a new favorite actor in Adam Driver. While there are some things they would change if they could, they made the show they wanted to make. There were a few fantastic stand-out episodes that were character capsules ("Japan", "Panic in Central Park", and "Boys" being the best), but mostly the show was a visual representation of how confusing life in your mid-20s can feel ... especially for those who are privileged enough to afford an indulged, esoteric existence. We find her living with her old roommate Marnie, who is loosely helping to raise Grover while trying to find her own place in life and reminding Hannah of her lost independence.

Every scene is bare bones, with rarely more than two people sharing the screen at a time.

Marnie is having phone sex with someone while putting on an English accent, and Loreen walks in on her. Loreen apologizes, and Marnie tells her about Delvin, the personal trainer she was on the phone with. It's not the same argument they had in the very first episode of this now concluded series, when Loreen said she would no longer provide Hannah with financial support. It calls to mind previous episodes, such as "Another Man's Trash", or "American Bitch", that also presented Hannah in a vacuum.

"Do you know how insane this economy is right now?" "F***ing everyone! For their whole lives!"

And Hannah's flailing. While Marnie needs to metaphorically get off Hannah's teat, Grover is having the opposite problem: failure to latch on.

You've come a long way, Hannah. If you were waiting for the payoff of Hannah becoming the famous writer she always thought she might be, you haven't been watching the same show I have.

And when Girls finally ends, it ends quietly.

"Latching" is, even for Girls, a disorienting and bleak episode.

The enduring image - a amusing one - was the sight of Hannah outside her house, outfitted with a pair of breast pumps that looked like a couple of flugelhorns sticking out of her chest.
