In Reuters report on this story today they've added that "As part of the agreement, Google will also develop a tool allowing users to choose a default search engine on their Android devices".

Google's two-year antitrust battle with Russian competition authorities is finally coming to an end. Not only is the company being fined $7.8 million United States dollars, but it has agreed to allow the pre-installation of third-party apps.

Google was hit with an anticompetitive lawsuit in Russian Federation over forcing its own search engine as default for Android phones sold with Google Services.

A long-running dispute between Google and Russia's antimonopoly watchdog has now reached some level of closure, as Google has now reportedly arrived at an out-of-court settlement with Russian Federation regarding the tech company's Android OS.

Google settled its dispute with Russia's antitrust watchdog in an agreement that opens the way for local search engine Yandex (YNDX) to be preinstalled on Android devices. The regulators demanded that Google alter its agreements with mobile device producers in order to enable the installation of third-party apps. This included the exclusivity and priority placement of Google apps as well as the provisions limiting installation of other developers' apps and services.

Russia-US relations at an 'all-time low' following Syria strike
It was an ominous start to Tillerson's visit. "The world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have this kind of relationship". But he said Moscow and Washington had agreed to continue co-operating to try to find a political solution for Syria .

Google would preload its own apps, including the search engine, on phones running Android.

Despite the nature of the settlement, Google will still have to pay a 438m rouble ($7.8; £6.2m) fine imposed after it failed to appeal the case last August. Yandex now holds a 55 percent share of the search market in Russian Federation, while Google clings to a 40 percent share. The agreement was signed for six years and nine months. This widget will prompt users with a "choice screen", where they can select between Yandex, Google, or any other search engine who may sign a commercial agreement with Google for inclusion on this list. I suspect it will have only a limited impact on most Google apps.

"The settlement will have a positive effect on the market as a whole", FAS head Igor Artemiev said.

The search engine giant has often used the Play Store as leverage to stop manufacturers from changing the default search engine on an Android device or bundling competing apps.
