Tax Day demonstrators demand that Trump release tax returns

Warren Dawson | 16 April, 2017, 03:08

Violence broke out and several arrests were made Saturday afternoon at competing rallies supporting and opposing President Trump in Berkeley. She says she considered not paying her taxes this year as a protest to Trump not releasing his.

The atmosphere was festive on Saturday at a downtown Chicago rally where a sousaphone band played and rally goers chanted. When pressed on the issue as president, he's said he doesn't think most Americans care.

The protests were timed to coincide with the traditional April 15 deadline for annual United States tax filings. "Because of his refusal, Americans have been denied the opportunity to vet his potential conflicts of interest, and have been left wondering why Mr. Trump is so intent on hiding his business dealings and financial ties".

And in October, The New York Times reported that Trump had declared a $916 million loss on his 1995 federal tax return, citing three pages of documents from the return.

President Donald Trump's motorcade took a circuitous route back to Mar-A-Lago after he spent Saturday morning at his golf course, avoiding Tax Day protesters headed toward his Palm Beach estate.

Speaking at his first news conference since winning the presidential election, Donald Trump defended his decision not to release his tax returns, saying the American people "don't care at all".

"Without seeing his taxes, we'll never really know who he's working for", said Dinkin, who expects the marches to draw at least 100,000 protesters.

Jared Kushner omits some foreign contacts on security form
She was one of only a few senior aides not present at this week's summit with the Chinese president at Trump's Florida estate. As for the former Breitbart executive, if he is fired, just blame Jared Kushner , Trump's son-in-law, for the inside job.

Some say Trump's tax returns might show he has paid little or nothing to run the government he now heads, or that he was deeply indebted to Russian, Chinese or other foreign interests.

The gesture of transparency that every president since Gerald Ford has performed shortly after taking office had protestors insisting Trump prove he's not hiding anything by releasing the records. But Trump's full returns would contain key details about things like his charitable giving, his income sources, the type of deductions he claimed, how much he earned from his assets and what strategies Trump used to reduce his tax bill.

In Los Angeles, thousands of protesters marched from Pershing Square to City Hall yelling chants including "Hey hey!"

Earlier, Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, called on Trump to 'knock off the secrecy and said people have "a basic right to know whether the president pays his fair share".

Still, the White House has not indicated Trump has any intentions of releasing his returns.

Protesters are expected to take part in Tax Day demonstrations nationwide, calling on President Donald Trump to release his tax returns.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Friday posted an online video urging Congress to force Trump to release the returns.
