Founding members of J. Geils Band dead at 71

Madeline Patrick | 16 April, 2017, 02:58

In 1980, the band scored a slew of Hot 100 Billboard singles including "Freeze-Frame", "Love Stinks", and "Centerfold", and were staples on MTV.

Geils was found unresponsive at his home in Groton, Massachusetts, around 4 p.m. on April 11, the Daily Mail reported. He was declared dead at the scene...

Groton Chief of Police Donald Palma Jr. said that even though "foul play" was not suspected, investigation was to be carried out as the death was "unattended".

The band's lineup was stable through their years of success and included charismatic lead singer Peter Wolf, Danny Klein on bass, Stephen Jo Bladd on drums, Seth Justman on keyboards and Richard (Magic Dick) Salwitz on harmonica and saxophone.

In 1999, they reunited for the odd reunion show, but without Geils, who sued the rest of the band for using the group's name and for touring under it without him. But they did not achieve commercial fame until the 1980s, when they released radio mainstays such as "Centerfold", "Love Stinks" and "Freeze-Frame".

That was the case in this incident, but Pickard said it was too late - the child's head took the brunt of the injury. This happened at the Sun Dial Restaurant, which is known for rotating on top of the Westin Hotel.

Geils lived in Groton for over three decades, and his love for the town has led to Groton, in 2007, designating December 1 as "J". Both live albums - "Live" Full House and "Blow Your Face Out" - are considered timeless rock-blues classics that captured the band at the height of their craziest. Geils had called Groton home since 1982.

Geils and Wolf performed together off and on for years after their split. "R.I.P Jay Geils".

Geils founded his eponymous band in 1967, when he attended the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in MA. Wolf did not appear on the band's final album "You're Gettin' Even While I'm Gettin' Old" and the remaining members made a decision to split a year later in 1985.

While J. Geils will be sorely missed it is certain his music will continue to populate the airwaves and inspire singalongs until the end of time.
