Turkey detains Islamic State suspects over planned attacks - Anadolu

Javier Burns | 15 April, 2017, 12:14

In a bid to prevent any last-minute schism with the MHP, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim also said he would resign if there was any move towards a federal structure for Turkey. Critics say the vote would give the president dictatorial powers.

At another rally later Thursday in the same part of the country, Erdogan expanded on his rift with European governments, accusing them of closing their doors to his ministers but opening them to members of terrorist groups that Turks is fighting against.

The visit to the grave of Turkes, the spokesman of the 1960 military coup that led to the hanging of Erdogan's political idol, former premier Adnan Menderes, may seem surprising and even contradictory. Under the current Constitution, presidents are required to severe ties with their parties.

Erdogan could also call for early elections, allowing him to take another "mandate" at the ballot box. The Constitutional Court - which will be the venue in which the president could be tried if parliament reaches a two thirds majority for his or her impeachment - will be composed of 15 judges, 12 of whose members will be appointed by the president and three by the parliament.

Markets are cautiously expecting a "Yes" vote and hoping that this will bring much-needed stability. If the president dissolves parliament, then both parliamentary and presidential elections will be renewed.

Nunes's Intel Claims Contradicted by Documents Seen by Lawmakers on Both Sides
The lawmakers' assessment comes after Trump, in a New York Times interview last week, accused Rice of breaking the law. Bloomberg reported that Rice made "dozens" of requests for the identities of Trump transition team members.

Other changes include the minimum age of parliamentary candidates reduced to 18 and the number of deputies increased to 600.

The MHP is a party in opposition to Erdogan's Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) with, in theory, a starkly different ideology. Parliament approved the amendments in late January with 339 votes from the AKP-MHP alliance while the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) stood against government system adjustment.

Erdogan and government officials are accused of using state resources and official functions such as openings of infrastructure projects to campaign in favor of the changes.

In rally after rally, he has argued that the new system will end periods of unstable governments and coalitions, prevent coups similar to last summer's failed attempt, and stop the system of dual leadership between the prime and the president.

Since last July's coup bid, Erdogan's government has imposed a state of emergency, shut down more than 200 media outlets, about 1,000 schools and 15 universities, and dismissed more than 130,000 civil servants including teachers, United Nations rights experts reported Thursday. An emergency rule decree has removed the Supreme Electoral Board's powers to fine media who do not provide impartial coverage.
