Nunes's Intel Claims Contradicted by Documents Seen by Lawmakers on Both Sides

"The astonishing reports that senior White House officials in the Obama Administration, most notably then-National Security Advisor Susan Rice, may have abused their powers of office to violate the 4th Amendment protections by "unmasking" the identities of USA citizens involved with the Donald J. Trump presidential campaign in intelligence reports gives great cause for concern", stated a letter Rep. Brian Babin sent to Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday.

Bloomberg reported that Rice made "dozens" of requests for the identities of Trump transition team members.

Ms. Rice finds herself embroiled in allegations that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election and whether the Obama White House potentially leaked what it knew about the Trump campaign's ties to the Kremlin.

Members of the House and Senate intelligence committees have since been able to see the intelligence reports connected to Rice's requests at the National Security Agency's headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland, over the past week CNN reported Wednesday.

House and Senate Intelligence committees are investigating whether Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election, and whether the Kremlin might have coordinated with Trump campaign associates in an attempt to help him win.

Sebastian Gorka, a Trump foreign policy aide, cast Rice's actions as worse than the Watergate scandal that felled President Richard Nixon in an interview with pro-Trump Fox News host Sean Hannity.

The lawmakers' assessment comes after Trump, in a New York Times interview last week, accused Rice of breaking the law.

Trump Indicates Steve Bannon Is Actually On The Chopping Block
Steve Cohen says it is likely that President Donald Trump's son-in-law will determine the president's policy on marijuana. It's clear that Bannon's fate - almost a week later - still hangs in the balance.

Still, some members of Congress continue to have concerns about the justification given for the unmasking requests and the standards for the intelligence community to grant such requests, which reveal the private data of United States persons mentioned in intelligence reports based on routine intelligence collection aimed at foreign nationals.

'Perhaps I didn't know how right I was, because nobody knew the extent of it'.

"The allegation is that somehow the Obama administration officials utilized intelligence for political purposes, " Rice said "That's absolutely false". He also called it "truly one of the big stories of our time".

It's not that I think Sciutto is incapable of good reporting, but asking me to choose between Devin Nunes asserting on record he's seen abuses of power, and Sciutto first dismissing Nunes out of hand and later refuting Nunes with anonymous sources making subjective claims, well, that isn't much of a choice at all. "If I read it and I think, in order for me to really understand is this significant or not so significant, I need to understand who the "U.S. person" is", Rice said.

Last week, Republican and Democratic members of the House Intelligence Committee finally got a chance to see Nunes's incendiary documents for themselves.

Nunes' office has not responded to CNN's request for comment. That came from USA officials who spoke to Eli Lake, although Trump himself seems sufficiently convinced that she was involved somehow to have suggested publicly that she might be guilty of a crime.
