The "Uphold Historical Marriage Act" has been nearly universally panned, with the Charlotte Observer rightly noting that the mere introduction of the bill has offered an easy opportunity for the nation to "once again" start "mocking North Carolina". Then the bill quotes Genesis to argue that marriage equality "abrogates the clear meaning and understanding of marriage in all societies throughout prior history". Kennedy wrote in his 2015 opinion that the justices concluded "there is no lawful basis for a State to refuse to recognize a lawful same-sex marriage performed in another State on the ground of its same-sex character".

The bill says the legislature has "the final authority" on UNC system schools' membership status in athletic conferences.

The North Carolina Democratic Party released a statement saying that "Republicans in the General Assembly seem to have a special talent for embarrassing themselves and our state".

Lawmakers in North Carolina are once again looking to roll back federal protections for LGBTQ folks in their state.

The legislation would put the state on a collision course with the US Supreme Court - and the state's Governor and Speaker have both shut it down.

Last May, it passed its infamous "bathroom bill", also known as HB2, that prohibited transgender people from using bathrooms consistent with their gender identity.

The bill would order state government to return to amendment one, a constitutional amendment approved in a 2012 voter referendum.

The bill would actually affect about 16 schools in North Carolina.

MIchael J. Gerhardt, a constitutional law professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, agrees. Having lost hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue due to the discriminatory nature of HB2, HB 780 isn't expected to pass. Two of the three legislators who sponsored HB780 also filed a bill earlier this year seeking to remove the provision from North Carolina's constitution that would prevent the state from seceding.
