Rose sees late lead slip away at Augusta National

Masters Rose sees late lead slip away at Augusta National

Eighteen years later, the same guy, or at least a guy with the same name, shows up at Augusta National for the 74th major of his career and we think, "Really?"

It was worth the wait.

He made a birdie on No. 14, and on the par-5 15th, he almost dropped his 8-iron directly into the cup.

The green jacket symbolizing Masters supremacy once seemed like the last major prize Garcia would contend for, having called the Augusta National layout silly and insane and suffered heartbreaking near-misses over two decades of trying.

It marked the first Masters playoff since Adam Scott beat Angel Cabrera to become the first Australian to wear the Green Jacket in 2013.

In a dazzling turn of events Sunday as the Georgia pines began to cast lengthy shadows on Augusta National Golf Club, Garcia recovered from a two-shot deficit with six holes to play and an errant drive on the par-5 13th that was destined for disaster to win the 81st edition of the Masters in a playoff against Justin Rose.

With patrons still frenetic over Garcia's eagle, Rose holed key birdie putts on Nos. "That gave me a lot of belief, and for some reason, when I get into playoffs now lately, I'm quite comfortable".

"I thought Sergio played very composed, played very well, and he played like he wasn't going to be denied - even after he made a couple mistakes".

"You know, how positive I stayed even when things weren't going that well on 10 and 11".

Nolan Arenado and Mark Reynolds homered and Antonio Senzatela pitched five strong innings in his major league debut to help the Colorado Rockies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Thursday.

Deadlocked after nine holes, the two friends and rivals produced an enthralling back nine showdown worthy of any Masters champion in what became a head-to-head battle.

Garcia's legion of fans around the world surely feared another nightmare ending, but this time there was a happy ending for the Spaniard.

"That putt is kind of a contrary little putt", Rose said. "That putt really turned the clock a little bit for me". Garcia's caddie was even wearing the No. 89, the same number Danny Willett's caddie wore previous year when he won the Masters and the same number Jack Nicklaus' caddie wore when he won his sixth Masters in 1986.

"I feel bad I went so downhill while Rickie was still in it, because it is tough when you don't see a ball go in the hole", he said. Then he followed that by saying that he's glad that he can be asked about being the best player to only win one major in the future. Garcia, though, added another when it mattered in the play-off. "It was so freaky that I didn't feel one nerve". Garcia made his winning birdie on the famed 18th green launching a celebration that had to be felt all the way to Spain and ended his streak of 73 majors without a win.

Charl Schwartzel, the 2011 champion, closed with a 68 to grab third at 6 under.

Now we can fully embrace Garcia's career instead of feeling sympathy for him. He missed a birdie putt on No. 16 to fall one behind Rose, then climbed back into a tie when Rose bogeyed the 17th, and the entire tournament came down to one hole.

On the 72nd regulation hole, Rose missed an eight-foot birdie putt, leaving Garcia a five-footer to win, but he pushed it wide right.
