But the winning jockey rode through the pain barrier to get fit ahead of schedule and was repaid with first place aboard 14-1 shot One For Arthur.
One For Arthur was ridden by Derek Fox and trained by Kinross-based Lucinda Russell, whose partner and assistant is former champion jockey Peter Scudamore.
Cause of Causes, under amateur Jamie Codd, managed to hold off the fast charging Saint Are, runner-up in 2015, whilst the favourite Blaklion was fourth giving the oldest jockey in the race, 41-year-old Noel Fehily, his first finish in the top four in 15 rides.
Lucinda Russell joined a distinguished group of female trainers by winning the 170th running of the Grand National with One For Arthur at Aintree on Saturday. It's the best feeling I've ever had.
"That was unbelievable, I'm tearful but it is wonderful", Russell, whose partner and assistant at their Arlary House Stables in the Kinross countryside, is former champion jockey Peter Scudamore.
Success for Russell's runner would give Scotland only their second win in the race after Rubstic's victory in 1979.
For a fifth successive year, all 40 horses that took part in the race returned safe and well.
Deborah, from Gullane, East Lothian said: "I just can't believe it".
Talking about his recent injury he added: "I'd like to thank Jack Berry House for getting me back after the injury a few weeks ago".

One For Arthur, the locally-trained Grand National victor, could put in an appearance for the fans, however, as Belinda McClung, one of his owners, is a steward at the course.
The Irishman said: "It is just unbelievable".
"I just can't believe we've won the Grand National - it's fantastic". Lucinda Russell, the trainer of One For Arthur, should also continue her good form in the card's hunter chase, where Hey Listen (4.40), a lightly-raced point-to-point victor, is now 4-1. A sign of a true race horse to win the Grand National. Arthur just cruised that race. He credited rehabilitation centre Jack Berry House for helping him get back into the saddle so quickly. I felt we'd done everything we possibly could to get this horse here.
