Cotton had a rough 2017 debut, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and two walks over 4 1/3 innings in Wednesday's 5-0 loss to the Angels.

Meanwhile, Khris Davis launched his fourth homer, a two-run blast in the fourth inning, and that was all it would take to get the A's back to.500 at 4-4 once Santiago Casilla and Sean Doolittle finished up in relief.

The right-hander's lone bit of slippage in his six innings of work came in the fourth inning when Ryon Healy's sinking liner to right couldn't be handled by a diving Paolo Orlando and Davis followed that up with his fourth homer. The shot to right on a 3-0 pitch from Ian Kennedy (0-2) barely scraped the wall, but it gave Cotton the only help he needed a sun-splashed afternoon.

OUR PICK: The Royals are 5-1 in Kennedy's last six starts when he faces a team with a losing record and are 4-0 in his last four outings when their opponent allows five runs or more in its previous game. But the mistake he threw to Davis proved to be decisive. Cain reached third after a single by cater Salvador Perez with two down. After Cain's single, the Royals did not get another hit until Raul Mondesi's sixth-inning leadoff single. Just 55 of Kennedy's 95 pitches went for strikes, but after allowing three runs in the second inning, he did manage to keep the Royals in the game. The game ended with Brandon Moss striking out.

USA sends message to N Korea, China with Syria strike
But the United States president later agreed to respect the "One China" policy in a telephone call with President Xi in February. Russian Federation might even see an advantage in the strike, said Andrew Tabler, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute.

Kennedy allowed just two hits and two walks in six innings on a day where the Royals had a pregame tribute to Yordano Ventura, the Royals pitcher who was killed in a January vehicle crash.

Monday's ceremony included a saxophonist playing "Amazing Grace" and several of Ventura's teammates laying a banner on the mound. Among them was a very special first pitch.

Ventura was preparing to report to spring training in Arizona on January 22 when he was killed on a unsafe section of road in the Dominican.
