A trio of strong earthquakes damaged buildings and caused panicked tourists to flee a popular dive resort near the Philippine capital on Saturday, officials and eyewitnesses said.

A magnitude-5.9 quake has struck the Philippines on the main island of Luzon.

A third quake with a magnitude of 4.1 occurred nearly two hours later at 4:43 p.m.

A state of calamity means local officials can tap emergency funds and impose a price freeze on basic commodities.

Intensity VII was felt in Mabini, Batangas; Intensity VI in Calatagan, Nasugbu and Tingloy, Batangas.

The network also broadcast live footage of frightened commuters fleeing the passenger terminal at the port of Batangas, near the epicenters.

In Mabini, Hotel Camp Netanya, an upscale resort in Barangay Ligaya, was badly hit when part of the building collapsed, damaging three parked vehicles.

Phivolcs said Intensity 5 was documented in Batangas City, Sto.
