While the United Kingdom mulls possible action, the European Commission approved the deal "unconditionally".

Britain's Ofcom is still investigating whether the deal would serve the public, and is due to issue its report by May 16.

The European Commission has cleared 21st Century Fox's acquisition of Sky, concluding that the move raised no anti-trust concerns.

Fox released a statement following the decision: "21st Century Fox welcomes today's decision by the European Commission clearing unconditionally its proposed transaction to acquire the outstanding shares of Sky that it does not already own".

European Commission competition authorities have cleared 21st Century Fox to buy the 61% of broadcaster Sky that it does not yet own.

Nothing is impossible : Spurs
Tottenham kept their Premier League title hopes alive as three late goals saw them snatch a 3-1 victory over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday.

Murdoch-controlled Fox already owns 39 percent of Sky, a broadcasting and broadband company with operations throughout Europe, including Austria, Germany, Ireland, Italy and the United Kingdom.

Murdoch first tried to gain full control of Sky in 2011 but was forced to abandon the attempt as controversy raged over the hacking of the telephones of celebrities and crime victims by his tabloid the News of the World, which was subsequently shut down. The two companies compete "only to a limited extent" in acquiring television content and providing pay-TV channels.

The Commission, which polices the EU's anti-trust cases, said its finding was based exclusively on an assessment of the market impact of the deal, not on the issue of plurality in media ownership which is the focus of the British probe.

This time round, James Murdoch, now the chief executive of Fox and chairman of Sky, has said he does not expect to make any "meaningful concessions" to get the deal through.
